Liner Notes:
THE SUN NEVER SETS ON ENGLISH QUARTETSAs you may or may not recall, it was the British who discovered the potato. Until British enterprise developed that peculiar vegetable, the potato had sat around all over the world looking rather useless, not hard enough to make a decent weapon, not pretty enough to arrange in bouquets. Now, the British potato is digested by all.
The same is true of quartets.
The British have rediscovered the quartet, and made it palatable for all. Until a couple of years ago, quartets were used only to sing things like "Sweet Adeline" or, for show-stoppers, "Jada." Then came the British discovery.
While Parliament worried itself about losing more colonies, those Britishers too young to vote began forming by fours, making music, and recolonizing the world with their singing.
It's not exactly what Rudyard Kipling might have hoped for his Empire, but it has been successful.
One of these foursomes calls itself, as if you didn't know, The Kinks. As this is being written, The Kinks are on their third straight Top Ten record in America:
1. "YOU REALLY GOT ME" 2. "ALL DAY AND ALL OF THE NIGHT" 3. "TIRED OF WAITING FOR YOU"At any rate, they should be more popular and less fatty than potatoes in nothing flat.
